CCM Clinical Staff

(Last Updated On: July 11, 2017)

Any care coordinator providing Chronic Care Management services that count towards the 20 minute monthly total must be “clinical staff.” In other words, the personnel must meet the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) definition of “clinical staff.”

CPT defines clinical staff as:

“Allowed by law, regulation, and facility policy to perform or assist in the performance of a specified professional service, but who does not individually report that professional service”

Examples of clinical staff allowed to provide Chronic Care Management services for patients with 2+ chronic conditions include:

  • Registered Nurses (RN)
  • Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW)
  • Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN)
  • And more

In most practices, front office staff scheduling appointments / calling patients would NOT qualify as Chronic Care Management providers as they do not meet the above CPT criteria for “clinical staff.”
